Ways to Alleviate Stress – Rule One

Follow the advice of Elaine Frank, VP, American Institute for Preventive Medicine:

“Determine what aspects of life upset you the most and search for ways of improving them. Stress is desirable as long as its manageable. To deal with stress is to find ways to manage it.”

Ways to Alleviate Stress:

If you’re stopped by a thief and find yourself looking down the barrel of a .357 Magnum, you’re obviously in a very stressful situation that has it’s own set of rules.

However, in your day-to-day world, to access your stress level, you must determine what is normal reaction and what’s not rational.

Dr. Paul Rosch, director of the American Institute of stress, points out, “Jobs or people or events are not necessarily stressful its how you perceive them.”

Example, you are suddenly and without any prior indication, summoned to the bosses office. Not only is this not expected but you have no idea what he wants to talk to you about - having a stress reaction in this situation would be considered normal as it would be the direct result of not being prepared. But, if you had been given ample notice as to why the meeting was called and you prepared accordingly, and you overreacted , your response is not normal.

Ways to Alleviate Stress:

One of the keys for stress relief is preparation to minimizing rational reaction.

When faced with a stressful situation, force yourself to pause and take stock. Is your reaction caused by what you perceive to be physical and/or emotional danger?

First deal with what you can change.

  • Be honest with yourself, are you in what could be described as a “difficult” situation, and you’re turning it into a debacle?

  • Determine who or what is the cause of your anxiety. Can you just walk away?

  • Are you trying to measure up to someone else’s expectations?

  • Did you put yourself in a “no-win” situation because of some unrealistic goal you set for yourself?

  • Are you expecting too much of yourself?

  • Do you find yourself in this stressful situation because of frustration, a deadline, a decision to be made?

  • Can everything be rearranged?

Now, this is when you talk to yourself in a reassuring manner. Is there another way to view what is happening?

Be real, what is the worst thing that can happen?

One of the most important ways to alleviate stress is to take the time, to examine your life and to understand the choices that get you into stressful situations.

“You can alter the condition of your life
by altering the attitudes of your mind.”

Dr. William James

“The best thing about the future is
that it only comes one day at a time.”

Abraham Lincoln

Ways to Alleviate Stress – The Word Game:

Some computer word processing programs have a “spell check” that automatically corrects any errors in spelling. Usually they draw your attention to the mistake by underlining them with a squiggled red line. For your brain-computer, you’re going to have a “negative word” check.

You install this program by playing a simple mental game that helps you develop a more positive, high energy attitude.

Whenever you catch yourself using a negative word have your brain-computer software underline it red, hit your Delete key and replace the negative word with a more positive substitute.

Hopefully, if your software is operating properly, when you delete the negative word it will also erase it from your vocabulary.

To install your new software, replace the following words with your own positive word.

(This list is to get your started—take the time to list additional words so your mental software will work properly.)

anxious------------------ watchful
insulted------------------ misunderstood
overwhelmed---------- challenged
stressed------------------- busy
angry---------------------- vexed
______--------------------_________
______--------------------_________
______--------------------_________
______--------------------_________
______--------------------_________

Taking this POSITIVE word game one step further, you can include additional replacement benefits to your brain-computer’s software by replacing the “better-positive” word with a jet-fueled word.

Ways to Alleviate Stress – Don't carry the Heavy Load:

A lecturer, when explaining ways of alleviating stress to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, "how heavy is this glass of water?"

Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied, "The Absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it." "If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. "In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."

He continued, "And that's the way it is with stress relief. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on." "As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden."

So, one of the best ways to alleviate stress is always remember at the end of eavch day put down the burden of work - don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you're carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can - relax; pick them up later after you've rested - life is short - enjoy it!

  • Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.
  • We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, But they all have to live in the same box.
  • A truly happy person who understands the importance of stress relief is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

”No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”
Eleanor Roosevelt
