A Phased Retirement

A survey by Ipsos-Reid for BMO Financial Group indicates that Canadians, aged 45 or older, no longer believe the banker's maxim that you need $1 million in retirement savings in order to have a "reasonable retirement," or that it's too late to start saving for retirement after age 50.

The major reason for these new feelings is that 58 per cent of Canadians nearing retirement age now expect to continue working, at least in a reduced capacity and most often out of the home, beyond the normal age of retirement.

What about the first of eight million Canadian baby boomers who, on January first, 2006, qualified for retirement? David Foot, University of Toronto professor of economics who has studied demographic trends in Canada and around the world says - "Some boomers want to retire early and securely with enough money to live well. Others want to continue working at interesting jobs, perhaps with more flexibility, moving toward what Foot calls "phased retirement," but without being sidelined because of age."

Other surveys have shown that baby boomers want to continue to have a creative retirement job because of the money, love of working, camaraderie, or fear of not working.

American demographer Cheryl Russell, who has been observing baby boomers for decades believes later boomers, those now entering middle age, may have to downscale when they retire, with big business sending jobs offshore, cutting salaries and pensions. Those boomers, she says, have the accoutrements of the upper-middle-class lifestyle but little real wealth.
