Pet News Animals make wonderful companions for everyone – from infants to seniors – especially for those in their retirement years.

However, animal care professionals urge seniors that before they take on this responsibility, they carefully consider the following - Do you have the time and the means to care for a pet, both physically and financially?

They also suggest that retirees consider adopting an adult dog or cat. - An older animal may be a better fit for their lifestyle than a puppy or kitten.

As one animal expert notes – “"Unlike a puppy or kitten, adult animals are more likely to be calm, already housetrained and less susceptible to unpredictable behavior - older pets are often more easily physically managed by seniors than a stronger, more excitable younger animal."

– Here’s a list of the most popular dogs last year according to the American Kennel Club

Pet News - Lab Retriever

As it has been for16 years in a row, the Labrador retriever is the king of the dog pound, with about124,000 registrations, or14 percent of the club's total.

Pet News - Yorkie But the big pet news, the club said, was the No. 2 ranking: the Yorkshire terrier, overtaking larger breeds. The tiny Yorkie, favored by the wife played by Eva Gabor in television's Green Acres, had about 48,000 registrations in the United States.

The rest, in order:

  • German shepherds
  • Golden retrievers
  • Beagles
  • Dachshunds

Pet News – Humor

To be posted VERY LOW on the refrigerator door - snout height.

Dear Dogs and Cats:

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate of food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this.
Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible.
I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom.
If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years --canine or feline attendance is not mandatory.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our front door:

To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About Our Pets:

  1. They live here. You don't.
  2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. (That's why they call it "fur"niture.)
  3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
  4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.

Remember: Dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

  1. Eat less
  2. Don't ask for money all the time.
  3. Are easier to train
  4. Usually come when called.
  5. Never drive your car.
  6. Don't hang out with drug-using friends.
  7. Don't smoke or drink.
  8. Don't worry about having to buy the latest fashions.
  9. Don't wear your clothes.
  10. Don't need a gazillion dollars for college... and
  11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children.

Pet News

Planning to board your pet in a kennel? Dr. Lee Izen, Terrell Mill Animal Hospital, Marietta suggests the following tips to keep your pet happy during his stay:
  • Consider bringing a familiar blanket or toy — but be sure to label all items.
  • Keep in mind that items might get dirty or lost.
  • Keep your emotions in check. Make the farewell short and sweet, so the pet doesn't pick up on your feelings of sadness.
  • Make sure the kennel requires that all entering pets have proof of immunizations. You may also want to check its policies on flea and tick control and whether it automatically gives all leaving pets a flea bath or shower.
  • Check the kennel's references - ensure that it offers seven-day telephone and e-mail availability.
  • Ensure that the kennel can accommodate both your vacation schedule and your dog's daily feeding and walking schedule – experts say your dog should get walked, or at least get to play outside the cage, every day.
  • Make sure the kennel feeds high-quality food twice a day - consider bringing your own food, if the kennel allows it.
  • Visit the kennel ahead of time and observe. Do the employees seem friendly and cooperative? Do they seem trained? Ask them how they discipline the dogs and whether they mix the dogs.
  • Does the kennel seem tidy? The cages should appear to be of adequate size for dogs and should be free of sharp edges.
